Turrilites gravesianus was named by d'Orbigny (1842). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hypoturrilites gravesianus by Förster (1975), Atabekyan (1985), Kennedy and Cobban (1993) and Mosavinia and Wilmsen (2017).
