Taxonomy
Meletta sardinites was named by Heckel (1850) [not the correct original genus].

It was recombined as Clupea sardinites by Gorjanovi-Kramberger (1884), Pauca (1929), Weiler (1938), Jerzmanska (1968) and Constantin (1999); it was recombined as Sardinella sardinites by Carnevale et al. (2006) and Přikryl et al. (2016); it was synonymized subjectively with Maicopiella longimana by Kovalchuk et al. (2020).
