Taxonomy
Sowerbyella bellarugosa was named by Ulrich and Cooper (1938). Its type specimen is USNM 92867 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Sowerbyella (Rugosowerbyella) bellarugosa by Cocks and Rong (1989).
