Snout moder- ate, not less than 1/4 oh head length, orbit small or mod- erately large; ascending and articular processes of prae- maxillare often fused, rarely completely separated (Beckerophotus); one supramaxillare, hyomandibulare subvertical or oblique, horizontal branch of praeoper- culum reduced, suboperculum at least two times less deep than operculum, branchiostegal rays do not over- lap with pelvic girdle bones. Pelvic bones do not reach cleithrum. Vertebral number 29–35 (most often 30–32), intermuscular bones developed in the trunk region and the anterior part of the caudal region, three elongated epuralia in the caudal skeleton. Anal fin begins behind the end of the dorsal fin; anterior rays of the dorsal fin not elongated; no fulcral scales at the base of the caudal fin. Photophores present (Beckerophotus, Neoscopelus) or absent (Scopelengys, Solivomer). |
