Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
J. H. Geisler et al. 2017 | Coronodon has the following mysticete synapomorphies: supra- occipital level with temporal fossa (character 25: state 1), broad basioccipital crests (39: 2), all cusps of posterior teeth subequal (99: 1), upturned antorbital process of maxilla (100: 1), and splayed basal cusps on posterior teeth (206: 1) (Figures 1, 2, S1, and S2; Data S1). Like some archaeocetes [8], its rostrum is twisted counterclockwise in anterior view (Figure 3). Corono- don havensteini is unique in having anterior lower molars labially overlapping posterior lower molars (Figure 2). | |
R. W. Boessenecker et al. 2023 | Species of Coronodon are large toothed mysticetes (ca. BZW = 460 mm) differing from unnamed coronodonid genus (represented by ChM PV 5720 and CCNHM 214) in slightly smaller size, possessing more elongate intertemporal constriction with tall sagittal crest (length of crest = 34% of BZW, v. 20% of BZW in ChM PV 5720), wider and dorsoventrally shallower maxilla with straight (rather than concave) lateral edge; periotic with multiple (rather than single) posteroexternal foramina. |
