Taxonomy
Cylindracanthus was named by Leidy (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Coelorhynchus by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Xiphiidae by Bohm (1926), Leriche (1942), Arambourg and Joleaud (1943) and Casier (1946); to Ichthyodorulites by Rapp (1946); to Blochiidae by White (1926), Casier (1958), Casier (1966), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Schultz (1987) and Udovichenko and Nessov (1987); to Acanthomorpha by Sepkoski (2002); to Dercetidae by Weems (1999) and Maisch et al. (2016); and to Acipenseriodei by Ebersole et al. (2019).
