Cochleosauridae was named by Broili (1923) [in Zittel & Broili (1923)]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Schoch (2013).
It was assigned to Rhachitomi by Kuhn (1946); to Edopoidea by Carroll (1988), Sequeira (2004) and Sidor et al. (2005); and to Edopoidea by Schoch (2013) and Schoch and Milner (2014).
