Nipponithyris was named by Yabe and Hatai (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is extant. Its type is Nipponithyris nipponensis. It is the type genus of Nipponithyridinae.
It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nipponithyridinae by Williams et al. (2006).
