Taxonomy
Phalangichnus was named by Schmidt (1959). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Phalangichnus alternans.

It was assigned to Procolophonoidea by Haubold (1971); to Cotylosauria by Haubold (1974); and to Rhynchosauroidae by Ptaszyński and Niedźwiedzki (2004).
