Herpetichnus bucklandi was named by Jardine (1850). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Corncockle Quarry, which is in a Cisuralian terrestrial sandstone in the Corncockle Sandstone Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Chelichnus bucklandi by Jardine (1853), Schmidt (1959), Haubold (1971) and McKeever and Haubold (1996).
