Ammonites foliaceus was named by Dittmar (1866). It is the type species of Metatirolites.
It was recombined as Tirolites (Metatirolites) foliaceus by Hyatt and Smith (1905) and Smith (1927); it was recombined as Metatirolites foliaceus by Spath (1951).
