Taxonomy
Ammonites erinaceus was named by Dittmar (1866). It is the type species of Trachysagenites.

It was recombined as Sagenites (Trachysagenites) erinaceus by Smith (1927); it was recombined as Trachysagenites erinaceus by Spath (1951).
