Lophius was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Lophioidei.

It was reranked as Otolithus (Lophius) by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983).

It was assigned to Lophioidei by Agassiz (1835); to Otolithus by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983); to Lophiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lophiidae by Arambourg (1927), Purdy et al. (2001), Schultz (2006), Carnevale and Godfrey (2018) and Schwarzhans (2019).
