Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
A. D. Rincón et al. 2016Baraguatherium differs from other sloths in the following character combination: toothrows parallel in occlusal view; long axis of molariforms parallel to the long axis of the toothrow; mandibular symphysis extends to the middle of the second lower tooth (mf1); diastema absent; tooth with a very thin layer of cementum; mf1-mf3 series of similar size and bilobate, with mf3 conspicuously piriform (anterior lobe much wider than the posterior lobe); occlusal surface of tooth beveled. Femur diaphysis straight; third trochanter positioned at the middle of the diaphysis and projects posteriorly; ectepicondyle and entepicondyle robust and project prominently. Baraguatherium differs from members of Megatheroidea and several Miocene mylodontoids (except Brievabradys, Orophodon, Octodontotherium, and Octodontobradys) in having a piriform last lower molariform (mf3). Differs from Paroctodontotherium, Octodontotherium, and Orophodon in having molariforms with a thin layer of cementum. Differs from Bolivartherium, Orophodon, and Pseudoprepotherium confusum by the presence of three bilobate lower molariforms. Differs from Brievabradys by its larger size, the presence of three bilobate lower molariforms, and the parallel lower toothrow. Differs from Octodontotherium by the absence of a marked asymmetric step between the anterior and posterior lobes in the last lower molariform. Differs from Octodontobradys by molariforms more quadrangular (in occlusal view) and mf3 piriform. Differs from Pseudoglyptodon spp. by the presence of bilobed (not trilobed) lower molariforms.
