Taxonomy
Scopelus lacertosus was named by Sauvage (1870). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Licata, which is in a Messinian marine horizon in Italy. It is the type species of Parascopelus.

It was recombined as Parascopelus lacertosus by Sauvage (1873), Woodward (1901), Arambourg (1925), Carnevale (2007) and Legendre et al. (2020).
