Hyporhamphus was named by Gill (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1012]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Beloniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hemiramphidae by Stringer (1998) and Bannikov et al. (2016).
