Ornithopoidea was named by Nopcsa (1929).

It was corrected as Ornithopodoidea by Nopcsa (1929); it was reranked as the superfamily Ornithopodoidea by Huene (1934) and Huene (1934); it was synonymized subjectively with Ornithopoda by Kuhn (1964).

It was assigned to Orthopoda by Nopcsa (1928); to Ornithopoda by Nopcsa (1929); and to Ornithischia by Huene (1934) and Huene (1934).
