Macroclemys schmidti was named by Zangerl (1945). Its type specimen is CFM P26014, a partial skull (juvenile fragmentary skull), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Macrochelys schmidti by Hutchison (2008) and Joyce (2016).
