Stichopteryx was named by Gaudant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Trachichthyoidei by Patterson (1993); and to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
