Zenopsis was named by Gill (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Zeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Zeidae by Danil'chenko (1960), Jerzmanska (1968) and Baciu et al. (2005).
