Taxonomy
Acanthognathus was named by Duncker (1912) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915 Nec Mayr 1887 (Hymenoptera)]. It is extant.

It was replaced with Dunckerocampus by Whitley (1933).

It was assigned to Syngnathidae by Danil'chenko (1960); and to Gasterosteiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
