Aulorhamphus was named by Zigno (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Acanthuroidei by Randall (1955); to Gasterosteiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aulorhamphidae by Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
