Fistularia was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Aulostomi by Agassiz (1835); to Fistulariidae by Arambourg (1925), Danil'chenko (1960) and Gaudant et al. (1996); and to Gasterosteiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
