Gasterosteus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 718]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Gasterosteidae.

It was assigned to Gasterosteidae by Hay (1902); and to Gasterosteiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
