Pseudosyngnathus was named by Kner and Steindachner (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Gasterosteiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Fistularioididae by Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
