Named in honor of the distinguished Colombian herpetologist, "the late Federico Medem M., in recognition of his outstanding contributions to knowledge of living Colombian turtles.

Taxonomy
Podocnemis medemi was named by Wood (1997). Its type specimen is IGM 1863, an other (a nearly plastron with an associated anterior half of the caparace), and it is a 3D body fossil.

Wood 1997Differs from all other pelomedusids referred to Podocnernis in having relatively short, rounded anterior and posterior plastral lobes; extremely narrow, V-shaped anal notch; proportionately small, squarish first pair of marginal scutes; enormous size (estimated midline carapace length = 101.5 cm); and position and shape of ischial scar on xiphiplastron (triangular in shape, expanded laterally, and moderately withdrawn from margin of anal notch).
