Acanthurus was named by Forskal (1775) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Teuthyei by Agassiz (1835); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acanthuridae by Randall (1955) and Argyriou (2022).
