Taxonomy
Hammatocnemis kanlingensis was named by Zhang (1981). Its type specimen is GSXU-XTR 341, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Ovalocephalus kanlingensis by Zhou et al. (2010).
