Acropoma was named by Owen (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. Its type is Acropoma alta.

It was assigned to Scomberoides by Owen (1854); to Lactariidae by Schwarzhans (1985); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acropomatidae by Schwarzhans (1980), Steurbaut (1984), Schwarzhans (2003), Carnevale (2007), Carnevale et al. (2014), Bannikov (2014) and Schwarzhans (2019).
