Archaeus was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915].

It was assigned to Carangidae by Danil'chenko (1960) and Danil'chenko (1980); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
