Stenopareia catathema was named by Howells (1982). Its type specimen is BM In21712, a pygidium, and it is a mold. Its type locality is Lauchlan Burn, which is in an Aeronian marine sandstone/siltstone in the Wood Burn Grits Formation of the United Kingdom.
