Chaetodon was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chaetodontidae by Arambourg (1927), Danil'chenko (1980) and Carnevale (2006).
