Capitosauroides was named by Haubold (1971). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Capitosauroides bernburgensis.

It was assigned to Temnospondyli by Kuhn (1971); and to Capitosauroidea by Haubold (1971), Demathieu and Haubold (1972) and Haubold (1974).
