Tetrapyle was named by Haeckel (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pyloniinae by De Wever et al. (2001); to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pyloniidae by Sharma and Takahashi (2007).
