Cyclopoma was named by Agassiz (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Percoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Serranidae by Weems (1999); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Percichthyidae by Carnevale et al. (2014) and Bannikov (2014).
