Dapalis was named by Gistl (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Serranidae by Khajuria and Prasad (1998); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Chandidae by Schwarzhans (2007); and to Ambassidae by Schwarzhans (1980), Schwarzhans (1985) and Gaudant et al. (2018).
