Epinephelus was named by Bloch (1793) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Epinephelidae by David (1943); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Epinephelinae by Aguilera and de Aguilera (2004); and to Serranidae by Arambourg (1927), Casier (1966), Nolf (1972), Purdy et al. (2001) and Schwarzhans (2007).
