Istiophorus was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Istiophorinae by Hay (1902); to Xiphiidae by Rapp (1946); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Istiophoridae by Schultz (1987), Fierstine (2001), Fierstine (2006), Fierstine et al. (2012) and Carnevale and Godfrey (2018).
