Pecten aequicostatus was named by Lamarck (1819).

It was recombined as Neithea aequicostata by Newton (1917) and Dartevelle and Freneix (1957); it was recombined as Neithea (Neithea) aequicostata by Dhondt (1973), Freneix and Odin (2001) and Kendrick and Vartak (2007).
