Leiognathus was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Leiognathidae by Danil'chenko (1960), Danil'chenko (1980) and Yabumoto and Uyeno (1994); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
