Gaidropsaridae was named by Jordan and Evermann (1898). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Gaidropsarinae by Gaemers (1984).

It was assigned to Anacanthini by Jordan (1963); to Gadidae by Gaemers (1984); and to Gadiformes by Bratishko et al. (2015).
