Lichas eriopis was named by Hall (1863). It is the type species of Lichas (Echinolichas).
It was recombined as Lichas (Conolichas) eriopis by Hall and Clarke (1888); it was recombined as Lichas (Echinolichas) eriopis by Gürich (1901); it was recombined as Echinolichas eriopis by Phleger (1936) and Thomas and Holloway (1988).
