Mullus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 503]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mullidae by Danil'chenko (1980), Steurbaut (1984) and Carnevale et al. (2006).
