Mupus was named by Cocco (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560,915]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Schedophilus by Bannikov (2000).

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Centrolophidae by Steurbaut (1984) and Schwarzhans (2003).
