Neoscombrops was named by Gilchrist (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scombropidae by Schwarzhans (1978); to Percichthyidae by Steurbaut (1979); to Acropomatidae by Schwarzhans (1980), Steurbaut (1982) and Steurbaut (1984); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
