Pagellus was named by Cuvier and Valenciennes (1830) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Sparoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Sparidae by Arambourg (1927) and Nolf and Steurbaut (1983); to Sparinae by Steurbaut (1984); to Sparidae by Steurbaut (1979) and Gaemers (1984); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
