Taxonomy

Aspideretes ellipticus was named by Hay (1908). Its type specimen is AMNH 1117, a carapace, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hummelichelys ellipticus by Chkhikvadze (2000); it was recombined as Trionyx ellipticus by Vitek and Joyce (2015).

Synonyms

Aspideretes grangeri was named by Hay (1908). Its type specimen is AMNH 3942, a partial shell (carapace), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cottonwood Creek, about half a mile below the Henry's Fork stage road (B3), which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in Wyoming.

It was recombined as Hummelichelys grangeri by Chkhikvadze (2000); it was synonymized subjectively with Trionyx ellipticus by Vitek and Joyce (2015).
Aspideretes annae was named by Zangerl (1944). Its type specimen is FMNH P 27241 (formerly UND 663), a partial skeleton (nearly complete carapace and plastron, isolated extremity bones), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is East of Little America, which is in a Bridgerian mire/swamp claystone in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Hummelichelys annae by Chkhikvadze (2000); it was synonymized subjectively with Trionyx ellipticus by Vitek and Joyce (2015).
