Plectorhinchus was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 503]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Plectorhynchinae.

It was assigned to Pomadasyidae by Steurbaut (1984); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plectorhynchinae by Tavera et al. (2012).
