Priacanthus was named by Oken (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Priacanthidae by Weiler (1938), Danil'chenko (1960) and Přikryl et al. (2016).
