Sarda was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Thunnidae by David (1943); to Thunninae by Bannikov (1979); to Scomberoidei by Weems (1999) and Purdy et al. (2001); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Scombridae by Arambourg (1927), Danil'chenko (1980), Fierstine et al. (2012) and Carnevale and Godfrey (2018); and to Sardini by Klawe (1977), Collette et al. (2001), Monsch and Bannikov (2011) and Oyanadel-Urbina et al. (2021).
